For Supporters, Ron Paul's Message Strikes A Chord

from GPB News
During the last presidential race, Paul had some of the most fervent supporters in the Republican field, but that didn't translate to electoral success. This year, Paul supporters are disappointed in the lack of coverage after he finished second in the Iowa straw poll. read more

This Week in Stripper News

from Mother Jones by Kate Sheppard
August is generally a slow news time in Washington. But things seem to be picking up steam everywhere else - this week, for example, has brought us an abundance of stripper-related political news:

  • In Texas, a Ron Paul supporter placed a full-page ad in a local paper seeking women who have had sex with Gov. Rick Perry to spill the deets. The ad specifically calls for women who identify as a stripper, escort, or "young hottie."

  • In Missouri, Republican Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder, who's expected to run for governor next year, sought to dismiss rumors about a relationship with a "Penthouse Pet" by arguing that he only watched her dance. Apparently, objectifying a woman is worlds better than actually carrying on a relationship with her.

  • And last, but not least, the college student who drew attention last year when he was detained for stripping to his skivvies at a TSA checkpoint in the Richmond, Va. aiport to reveal the 4th Amendment written on his chest is suing the feds for mistreatment. Aaron Tobey's lawyers allege that the "overbearing, heavy-handed and unfounded actions of security personnel violated free-speech and other constitutional rights." The judge in the case said he will decide within the next two weeks whether to let the case go forward.

Morning Briefing: August 19, 2011

from Five GOP Presidential Candidates by ThinkProgress

During a townhall meeting earlier this week, constituents in Rep. Randy Hultgren’s (R-IL) congressional district heckled him about raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations. The Washington Post reports, "It is a scene that has been repeated at town hall meetings across the country this August as Democrats make a concerted effort to use this month’s congressional recess to change a national narrative on taxes."

Rick Perry became a millionaire while holding public office through "well-timed sales in the Texas real estate market." Bloomberg reports that the Texas governor "bought property from friends and political allies and sold to Texas businessmen, such as computer magnate Michael Dell, and in the process made more than $1 million. Perry’s income also was supplemented by stock sales, according to his tax returns and county land and tax records."

Responding to GOP presidential candidates’ proclaimed desire to eliminate the EPA and question global warming science, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) said on MSNBC last night, "Rick Perry and these other guys are allergic to science. And too many of the tea party people, who basically don’t believe in science, are nowcontrolling the Republican Party."

A new study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism finds that Rep. Ron Paul’s (R-TX) presidential campaign has been virtually ignored by the major media, despite his strong grassroots support at events like the Ames Straw Poll. The researchers noted, for example, that Paul had 27 stories written about him since the beginning of the year, while Gov. Perry, who was not even running until last week, had 33.

Yesterday, the Obama administration unveiled more lenient rules for the deportation of undocumented immigrants, a move that was lauded by Democrats. The Department of Homeland Security’s new policy is expected to help thousands of young people who immigrated to the U.S. as children. DHS will conduct a case-by-case review of those in line for deportation, focusing on those convicted of violent crimes.

Civil Rights hero and Georgia congressman John Lewis (D) said yesterday that African Americans are frustrated with high unemployment, not President Obama. Lewis made the remarks at a job fair in Atlanta, and came partly in response to his colleague Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) who said recently that the black community is supportive of Obama but also "getting tired."

Glenn Beck reacted angrily to news that the House Ethics Committee was asking Members of Congress to not attend his rally in Jerusalem. "Speaker Boehner, you should be ashamed of yourself. The Republican Party should be ashamed of themselves. They don’t have to attend my event. Let them come to our biggest ally and only friend we still have in the Middle East in their hour of need," said Beck.

"Israeli warplanes launched air strikes on Gaza and militants fired more than 10 rockets into Israel" in the day following an attack on an Israeli bus in the southern portion of the country Thursday. Tensions threaten to escalate further as Egypt is now accusing Israel of inadvertently killing three Egyptian security forces in attacks on insurgents near the border.

And finally: The administration wants you know they feel your pain, so for his 50th birthday yesterday, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was given a "sad little" cupcake instead of a proper birthday cake. "Austerity now comes with frosting," CNBC’s John Carney tweeted.

‘If You are a White, Middle-Aged American Male, You Might be a Terrorist!’

from BreitBart Big Government by Michael Angley
In a hat tip to Jeff Foxworthy’s "You Might be a Redneck" shtick, the Department of Homeland Security has instituted a "You Might be a Terrorist" campaign. It goes something like this: "If you are white, male (maybe female), and middle-aged ... you might be a terrorist!"

The DHS has released yet another public service announcement-style video to push its If You See Something, Say Something campaign to encourage public vigilance in the War on Terror. The problem is, like previous PSA videos, the only way DHS can portray terrorists is as white men or women.

Now, I’m not saying it’s impossible for white, middle-aged American men and women to be terrorists, but the odds suggest otherwise. Over the last two years, 126 people have been indicted on terrorism-related charges, and all have been Muslim. According to Attorney General Eric Holder, only 50 of the 126 were Americans, but how many of these Americans were white men or white women has not been released. This latest Janet Napolitano "Big Sis" production comes on the heels of a July 2011 PSA video which also characterized white Americans as likely terrorists.

When Infowars broke the story about this first PSA, it theorized why DHS took this unique approach to portray who might bear watching:
"Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that the DHS’ own internal documents list predominantly white conservative groups as the most likely terrorists, such as Ron Paul supporters, gun owners, gold bullion enthusiasts, and a myriad of other comparatively banal political interests that are largely the domain of white middle class Americans."
I think the motive lies somewhere between the tyrannical (as the above quote suggests) and the politically correct. We’ve certainly seen how the left wants to disparage patriotic Americans, especially the Tea Party. WhetherVice President Joe Biden did or did not call Tea Partiers terrorists recently may never be proven, but it seems the sentiment is there, so I lean toward believing he did. It’s the same kind of disdain we see in the DHS 2009 report about right-wing extremism. Are the DHS PSA videos an attempt to create a perception of danger about a group of people who have not demonstrated any violence?

A large component of the DHS’s careful selection of actors in its PSA videos seems to be PC-based. Although the average terrorist who has attacked/attempted to attack American interests in recent years has been a young Middle-Eastern Muslim male, DHS could not bring itself to use that accurate depiction. It might offend the people who are actually trying to harm us! It’s the same mentality that causes DHS-owned TSA agents to frisk toddlers and senior citizens with great zeal. Profiling would be offensive, even when the data suggests a certain profile to watch for.

Something like $10M of taxpayer money was poured into the creation of these worthless videos ... government silliness at its worst. If the DHS was motivated by a streak of tyranny, then we have much more to fear as citizens than just these videos. If they were created because the PC crowd on the left feared being offensive to Muslims, then the irony is in how offensive the videos are to white, non-Muslim Americans. Either way, or somewhere in between, we need to shake up the makeup in Washington, DC. The inmates are running the asylum, and it’s time for some adult leadership in government.

For some reason there are just some conservatives who do not have a problem with certain unconstitutional acts. You know, like how Ron Paul finds ways to justify requesting earmarks for his district while simultaneously claiming to be against earmarks.

The Republicans’ new voodoo economics?

from Today's Washington Post - Front Page by Greg Ip
When John McCain was running for the Republican presidential nomination nearly 12 years ago, he declared that Alan Greenspan was so critical to the economy that, if the then-Federal Reserve chairman died, he’d put sunglasses on the body, prop him up and hope no one noticed.

It’s safe to say that GOP opinions of the Fed have slipped a bit since. Texas Gov. Rick Perry, a newly declared candidate for president, said it would be "treasonous" for Greenspan’s successor, Ben Bernanke, to "print more money between now and the election" in an effort to boost the economy. Other candidates have been equally damning if slightly less extreme in their statements. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has accused the Fed of "debasing the currency," while Rep. Ron Paul of Texas has written a bestseller called "End the Fed." The party’s economic standard-bearer in the House, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, repeatedly charges the Fed with "bailing out" what he considers President Obama’s reckless fiscal policy and wants the institution stripped of its mandate to promote employment.

As of today, both Reps. Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul would have a fighting chance in a matchup withPresident Obama in 2012.

That’s according to a new Gallup survey, which provides some of the strongest indication yet that Obama’s position in the polls has eroded - and also that nobody in the GOP has distinguished themselves as the most electable opponent.

The survey shows all four top GOP presidential candidates - Bachmann, Paul, Mitt Romney and Rick Perry - within the margin of error against Obama. Romney leads by 2 percent and Perry is tied, while the two House members trail narrowly.

Morning Briefing: August 23, 2011

from Five GOP Presidential Candidates
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney would beat President Obama if an election were held today, according to a Gallup poll released Monday. Romney leads Obama 48-46 among registered voters. Obama is tied with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, and leads Reps. Ron Paul (TX) and Michele Bachmann (MN) by two and four points, respectively.

In a CNN interview, GOP presidential contender Jon Huntsman (R-UT) criticized frontrunner Mitt Romney (R-MA) for enacting health care reform in Massachusetts. "Creating Obamacare before Obama, the most despised and reviled health care legislation in the history of this country, doesn’t cut it, and I think that will be terribly problematic," said Huntsman, who also lashed out against Gov. Rick Perry (R-TX).

Rep. Maxine Waters: ‘The Tea Party Can Go Straight to Hell’

from Education Action Group Foundation by Publius
From The LA Times:

Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) came out swinging against Republicans in Congress on Saturday as she addressed the unemployed during a forum in Inglewood.
No - this article has nothing to do with Ron Paul. But who could pass up the beauty and wisdom of Maxine Waters? Arghhhhh!
The event occurred a day after new statistics were released showing that California’s jobless rate last month went up to 12%, from 11.8%. California now has the second-highest rate of unemployment in the nation, trailing only Nevada at 12.9%, and its jobless rate is well above the U.S. average of 9.1%.

Waters vowed to push Congress to focus on creating more jobs. "I’m not afraid of anybody," said Waters. "This is a tough game. You can’t be intimidated. You can’t be frightened. And as far as I’m concerned, the ‘tea party’ can go straight to hell."

More than 1,000 people attended "Kitchen Table Summit," which was designed to give the jobless an opportunity to vent to elected officials and share their struggles about finding a job.
